Portrait of the European Coast Guard and Border Guard Agency (FRONTEX)
In 2018, we visited several external borders to depict Frontex activities. Where does it deploy its agents? What ground operations does it carry out to combat cross-border crime? Why does it send boats out to sea, while the European Union struggles to agree on the reception of rescued migrants? What happens at borders where it is absent? Answers through three reports: at the border between Poland and Ukraine, Greece and Turkey, Hungary and Serbia.

The agency intervenes, upon request, at the borders of member states with surveillance planes, boats, and special vehicles. It questions migrants to determine their nationality, conducts sea rescues, and coordinates returns to countries of origin. It does a lot and little at the same time. Moreover, it is sometimes difficult to know exactly what it does.
