Iconic location situated in Anderlecht, heart of the Brussels-Capital Region, one of the last urban slaughterhouses still in operation in Europe will end processing live cattle by 2028
Two companies rent the 5,000 square meters of slaughterhouse facilities: Abaco for large cattle (cows, horses, sheep) and Seva for pigs. In a long, unattractive rectangular building with two floors, each company has its own slaughter line. Around 230,000 animals are slaughtered here every year, accounting for 2 to 3% of the belgian market.

“They deliver to meat processing plants, butchers, collective kitchens and collective catering. Some of these SMEs specialize in a particular type of meat, while others cut them all,” explains Paul Thielemans, spokesperson for the company.
By 2028, according to a decision of the board of directors of SA Abattoir (which operates the premises), livestocks will no longer pass through the Brussels production site: the slaughtering business will stop after more than 130 years of activity.
